Dental hygiene is a crucial part of growing up, even for very young children. Some parents wait until their kids have permanent teeth before teaching them to floss, but it is better to start earlier than that.

It is recommended that children begin flossing their teeth as soon as they have started to group together. This usually happens between the age of three and six. Parents may need to help their kids floss for many years, especially if they are having a hard time with the process.

Starting the flossing process this early not only leads to healthier permanent teeth, but also promotes good dental hygiene. If children get into the habit of daily flossing when they are four, five, or six, they will continue this routine when they reach their teen years.

Even though kids can develop their dexterity fairly early, they should not be trusted to floss alone before the age of ten. Ideally, parents should be performing the flossing before this age. If a child is a quick learner, parents should diligently supervise the flossing process every night.

Always buy flexible, soft types of floss for your young children. Regular floss used by adults may be too rough for a child’s teeth and gums.

How To Teach Kids Flossing?

Take a long piece of floss and make circles on both ends. These circles should be large enough for your child’s fingers to slip through. When they have gotten a grip of the dental floss, guide their hands through the basic flossing motion.

This can be a slow process. You do not want to rush your child into flossing every inch of their mouth on the first night. Start with one or two areas where they have large pieces of food stuck, and slowly increase the level of flossing every night.

Children may experience some gum bleeding during the first few days of flossing. Do not panic when this happens. It is completely normal. The bleeding is part of the process that strengthens their gums for the long term.
