When determining who to select as your child’s pediatric dentist, we encourage you to consider Pediatric Smiles of Orem, first. One of the most important priorities you can set for your child’s overall health; is positive oral health care. We recommend that parents have their children seen by a pediatric dentist by no later than the child’s first birthday. We understand that the initial visit to the dental office for children can cause some anxiety for both the child and parents, we also recognize that this can be overwhelming; which is why we would like to do our best to ease your concerns. Pediatric Smiles of Orem would like to share what to expect during your child’s initial visit to our office.
What to expect during the initial visit:
• You will complete the New Patient form that provides us an overview of your child’s general health and oral history. (Please note that you can access this form here on the website, print it out, and bring it with you to your appointment)
• If your child is under the age of three, you will accompany them during the entire visit with the dentist and dental hygienist.
• If your child is at least three year old, parents will be asked to allow the child to have a personal visit with the dental hygienist and dentist.
• Prior to routine cleaning, your child will receive a preliminary teeth screening to detect potential tooth decay or gum disease.
• If the dental hygienist or dentist is concerned about the potential of cavities, a follow up x-ray may be ordered to confirm diagnosis.
• If your child is under the age of three, non-fluoride toothpaste will be used to clean teeth and gum line with gentle circular strokes.
• Your child’s teeth will be flossed.
• Following your child’s dental cleaning; you will receive a brief summary of their screening and be given tips on how to keep your child’s teeth healthy between the next dental visit.
• If follow up services are needed, such as a sealant, filling, crowns, or other services, options will be discussed as to how to make the procedures as easy as possible on the child to reduce fear and resistance.
• You will receive a complimentary toothbrush for your child and a motivational chart to encourage your child to take care of their teeth by brushing and flossing daily. (These are available for printout on our website)
Our facility is a pediatric dentist establishment with a child-friendly atmosphere, and caters to the youngest of clients. We encourage our parents to have conversations with their children prior to coming to our dental office so that the child will have some understanding of why it is important to visit the dentist. We recommend that parents not use language that may frighten their children or increase their fear of being seen by our staff. Children do not need to know about our tools or potential pain they could experience during their visit.
Having healthy teeth and gums is important to your child’s overall health. Many people believe that only the permanent teeth require care and dental visits. However, your child’s primary teeth and gums are just as subject to tooth decay, premature teeth loss, and gum diseases. Failure to properly address concerns with the primary teeth could lead to issues with your child’s oral language development, ability to properly chew their food, development of their facial bones, and inadvertently cause damage to their permanent teeth. Many of these potential oral health concerns can be detected as early as the initial visit and could subsequently be treated to prevent further concerns.
If your child is at least one year of age, please give us a call to schedule their initial visit. We look forward to seeing you and your child soon!
